RUD shortening elements and intermediate elements.

Avoids asymmetrical loading and tilting positions during lifting.

Shorten slings: Thanks to RUD shortening elements lifting means can be shortened quickly and easily on site and adjusted to the millimetre for the respective lifting process. The elements cover both rough shortening using shortening claws or shortening hooks as well as precise length adjustment of the chain with the aid of the fork head tensioner or the VIP length adjustment.

Through its unique product and material portfolio, RUD can supply the matching solution for every purpose of application. This wide portfolio is guaranteed by the material qualities ICE (Grade 120) and VIP (Grade 100).

What has to be taken into account with shortening elements?
What are the selection criteria?

1. Type of shortening.

For rough and fast shortening, we recommend the RUD multi-shortening claw. It is captive, yet is integrated into the chain and can be moved. Another advantage: the multi-shortening claw does not reduce the WLL of the suspension. An alternative is the chain-protecting shortening hook. Both RUD shortening claws and RUD shortening hooks comply with DIN 5692.

2. Handling options.

The nominal thickness of the suspension must match the shortening element, of course. However, how easy it should be to access the suspension during the adjustment is also important. While the RUD shortening hook is firmly mounted in the lifting chain, the multi-shortening claw can be moved along the strand as mentioned above. Which lifting requirements must be heeded and/or where does the load have to be set down?

Attention!

Never knot a chain to shorten it! Undefined forces and WLLs act on individual chain links during lifting. This can lead to dangerous damage to the lifting chain.

ICE-Multi shortening claw.

Perfect for creating a sling chain or for general shortening.

  • Manufactured in accordance with DIN 5692.
  • Can be fitted captively in the continuous chain leg.
  • No additional chain and coupling components required.
  • Can be fitted at any point of the chain leg.
  • Ideal chain support thanks to link-shaped chain pocket preventing a reduction in WLL.
  • Sturdy, spring-mounted safety bolt prevents accidental loosening of the fitted chains both in non-loaded and in loaded condition.

ICE-Shortening hook.

Can be captively mounted at any position on the chain strand, or moved along the chain.

  • In accordance with standard 5692 for shortening components.
  • No reduction in WLL.
  • Thickened hook tip to prevent improper use (e.g. incorrect hooking of the chain).
  • Angled insertion opening prevents the chain from falling out easily.

ICE-Clevis-type tensioner.

  • ICE spindle tensioner with clevis connection. For precise length adjustment of chain legs.
  • Particularly sturdy design thanks to solid threaded bar – with unscrewing protection, grease nipples and dirt seal on both sides.
  • Connection bolt and safety pins pre-assembled.

ICE-Balancers.

ICE balancers will be installed into 4-leg lifting means assemblies (2x 2-leg), to achieve an equal load distribution to all 4 legs. The length tolerances of the individual chain legs is compensated by tilting the ICE balancer. Thanks to the RUD balancer, you achieve an up to 33 % higher maximum WLL in the suspension as a result of the optimum force distribution across the individual strands.

Use of the multi-shortening claw.

  1. Pull the loose chain leg through the cross slot of the shortening claw and drive the safety pin (A) into place.
  2. With the chain relaxed, insert the required chain link of the leg to be loaded into the seat pocket (1), press safety bolt (3) and pull the chain leg down.
  3. Release the safety bolt and check locking.
  4. Undo in reverse order (pressed safety bolt (3).

Caution: When the shortening claw is used without safety pin (A), the chain always has to be suspended completely into the locking slot (B). During tightening or lifting of the shortened chain, the chain must always be hooked completely into the locking slot.
